History of Nigerien Independence Day
Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa. It was one of the last African countries to be colonized. After the 1885 Berlin Conference, France increased military efforts to take control. Niger’s ethnic groups resisted strongly.
It was not until 1922, after two decades of fighting, that Niger came under French control and became part of French West Africa.
Key steps to independence:
1. 1946: Niger became an overseas territory of France with its own parliament
2. 4 December 1958: Niger became a self-governing autonomous state within the French Community
3. 18 December 1958: The Republic of Niger was officially created
4. July 1960: France agreed to full independence
5. 3 August 1960: Niger gained full independence with Hamani Diori as its first president
